Beyond protein intake: bushmeat as source of micronutrients in the Amazon Ecology and Society
van Vliet, Nathalie; Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR); vanvlietnathalie@yahoo.com; Schor, Tatiana; Geography Department, Universidade Federal do Amazonas; tschor@ufam.edu.br; Tellez, Leady; Independent consultant; leadyjot@hotmail.com.
Wild meat is critical for the food security and income of millions of people, especially for poor rural households. Its role as a primary source of macronutrients worldwide has been recognized, but there have been few attempts to evaluate the contribution of bushmeat consumption to micronutrient intake. This is so particularly in the context of nutritional transitions induced by modernization and globalization. Here, we calculated the role of bushmeat as a source of micronutrients in the diets of urban and peri-urban inhabitants within the Tres Fronteras (Peru, Brazil, Colombia) region in the Amazon. We gathered food intake data from 35 households using 3-day 24-h food recalls combined with food weighing. Additionally, we interviewed 105 households on food...

Biblical Influences on Conservation: an Examination of the Apparent Sustainability of Kosher Seafood Ecology and Society
Levin, Phillip S.; NOAA Fisheries, Northwest Fisheries Science Center; phil.levin@noaa.gov; Azose, Joel; NOAA Fisheries, Northwest Fisheries Science Center, Conservation Biology Division;; Anderson, Sean; Environmental Science and Resource Management Program, California State University Channel Islands; sean.anderson@csuci.edu.
As a response to widespread concern about the state of marine ecosystems and the perceived failure of existing policies, many organizations are developing market-based instruments that promote sustainability. Eco-standards such as shopping guides, eco-labels, and stewardship certifications are now commonplace. However, in many cultures dietary guidelines have existed for thousands of years, and anthropologists have argued that such dietary rules emerged to reduce environmental impacts by encouraging exploitation of productive species, increasing ecological efficiency, or decreasing harvest of apex predators. We explored some of the environmental consequences for marine and aquatic systems of one of the more familiar ancient dietary traditions, keeping...

Biodiversity of Coreoidea and Pentatomidae (Heteroptera) from Atlantic forest protected areas. Insights into their conservation. Anais da ABC (AABC)
DELLAPÉ,GIMENA; COLPO,KARINE D.; MELO,MARÍA C.; MONTEMAYOR,SARA I.; DELLAPÉ,PABLO M..
ABSTRACT Although the majority of threatened species are likely to be tropical insects, knowledge of the diversity, ecological role and impact of insect biodiversity loss on ecosystem processes is very limited. Specimens belonging to four families of Heteroptera: Pentatomidae, Coreidae, Alydidae and Rhopalidae, were collected from a protected area in the Paraná Forest, the largest ecoregion of the Atlantic Forest, in Argentina. The assemblages were characterized and the biodiversity estimated, and they were compared with the assemblages found in five other protected areas in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. In our study area, Pentatomidae had the greatest richness and diversity; Coreidae was the second most diverse family, with highest sampling deficit,...

Biodiversity, Urban Areas, and Agriculture: Locating Priority Ecoregions for Conservation Ecology and Society
Ricketts, Taylor; World Wildlife Fund; taylor.ricketts@wwfus.org; Imhoff, Marc; NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center; mimhoff@LTPmail.gsfc.nasa.gov.
Urbanization and agriculture are two of the most important threats to biodiversity worldwide. The intensities of these land-use phenomena, however, as well as levels of biodiversity itself, differ widely among regions. Thus, there is a need to develop a quick but rigorous method of identifying where high levels of human threats and biodiversity coincide. These areas are clear priorities for biodiversity conservation. In this study, we combine distribution data for eight major plant and animal taxa (comprising over 20,000 species) with remotely sensed measures of urban and agricultural land use to assess conservation priorities among 76 terrestrial ecoregions in North America. We combine the species data into overall indices of richness and endemism. We...

Biogeographic notes on rare species of Euglossina (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Apini) occurring in the Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest Neotropical Entomology
Nemésio,André; Silveira,Fernando A..
The significance of specimens of rare species of Euglossina collected recently is discussed in terms of elucidating their biogeography and conservation status. Particularly, two new records are presented for the state of Minas Gerais, which considerably increase the known geographic range of the species they represent. These are a male of Eufriesea aeneiventris (Mocsáry), last recorded in 1943, which was attracted to methyl salicylate at the Parque Estadual do Rio Doce, and a male of Eulaema seabrai collected on flowers in the urban area of Sabará. This is also the first record for this species in the state.

Biologia reprodutiva de Calibrachoa elegans (Miers) Stehmann & Semir (Solanaceae) Rev. Bras. Bot.

Biological survey of a cloud forest in southwestern Mexico: plants, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals Biota Neotropica
Almazán-Núñez,R. Carlos; Alvarez-Alvarez,Edson A.; Ruiz-Gutiérrez,Fernando; Almazán-Juárez,Ángel; Sierra-Morales,Pablo; Toribio-Jiménez,Sarahi.
Abstract: Cloud forest ecosystems contain unique flora and fauna characterized by high levels of richness and endemism. However, this ecosystem is one of the most threatened because of land-use changes stemming from anthropogenic activities. Therefore, biological inventories are necessary to adequately assess the effects of land-use changes on species now and in the future. In this study, we conducted an inventory of plants and terrestrial vertebrates (amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals) in three fragments of cloud forest in southwestern Mexico. Field work was carried out for 15 days per biological group during distinct time periods (2005-2008). Conventional methods of species capture and observation were employed to record species. Recorded species...

Biology and population features of a rare species of Pseudopimelodidae from the Upper Paraná River Basin Biota Neotropica
Esguícero,André Luiz Henríques; Arcifa,Marlene Sofia.
Streams contain an expressive fraction of the South American fish diversity, mostly composed of small-sized, endemic, and rare species. Populational, reproductive, and diet aspects of Microglanis garavelloi were studied, aiming to make a wide characterization of this species of bumblebee catfish. This is an endemic species of the Upper Paraná River Basin, and the only representative of the genus in the watershed. It is a littoral-dweller of small rivers, with asymptotic length of 34.1 mm and a population mostly composed of individuals with 20-30 mm of standard length. This species presents high fecundity and mortality rate, and low longevity and growth rate. It is a total spawner, October to February being the spawning period, and probably has brood care...

Bird community as an indicator of biodiversity: results from quantitative surveys in Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
VIELLIARD,JACQUES M. E..
This short review presents the results obtained in several localities of Brazil on the composition of forest bird communities. Data were collected since the late 80's, after we introduced a new methodology of quantitative survey, based on acoustic identification and unlimited-radius point census. Although these data are still scattered, they show uniquely precise and coherently comparative patterns of composition of forest bird communities. Our methodology has the advantage of being absolutely non-disturbing, highly efficient in the field and immediately processed. Results confirm that the structure of a bird community is a good indicator of biodiversity, particularly useful where biodiversity is high. Many of these data are available only in unpublished...

Birds at Santa Bárbara Ecological Station, one of the last Cerrado remnants in the state of São Paulo, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Lucindo,Anderson da Silva; Antunes,Alexsander Zamorano; Kanashiro,Marina Mitsue; Dias,Manoel Martins.
In the state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil, the phytophysiognomy known as Cerrado takes less than 1% of its original cover. Thus, the establishment and management of protected areas are essential to save a significant sample of biodiversity of this environment in the region. The Santa Bárbara Ecological Station is one of the largest protected areas in São Paulo, and one of the few ones to cover a mosaic with most of the vegetation types of Cerrado. This article aims to increase the knowledge of avifauna in the reserve, showing new bird records and evaluating the association of species to their physiognomies. We carried out surveys from 2008 to 2013, which resulted in the record of 226 species, or 246 when in regard to Willis & Oniki’s works (1981,...

Birds from open environments in the caatinga from state of Alagoas, northeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Araujo,Helder Farias Pereira de; Rodrigues,Roberta Costa.
Even though the caatinga has been identified as an important area of endemism for South American birds, few studies have been conducted on the distribution, evolution and ecology of birds in this biome. Understanding how habitats contribute to maintain the regional bird diversity is extremely important. In this study, carried out in the backwoods of the state of Alagoas, we present a rapid survey of a caatinga area and discuss the composition of the avifauna in different habitats. From the record of 105 species, we estimated a local richness of 120 (± 5) species. Among the areas surveyed, the dense caatinga shrub areas contributed with more than 42% of the species, holding most of the forest-dependent birds. The open field areas and the vegetation patches...

Birds in an Australian Rainforest: Their Attraction for Visitors and Visitor's Ecological Impacts AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A.; Wilson, Clevo.
Lamington National Park in Queensland, Australia is noted for its rainforest and is part of the World Heritage listed property but prior to this work, no systematic study has been done of the importance of birds to its visitors. This study is based on data from survey forms handed to visitors at an important site in the park and completed by visitors following their visit. It yielded 622 useable responses. These enabled us to establish the comparative importance of birds as an attraction to this site for this sample of visitors. Furthermore, logit regression is used to target analysis and to identify factors that increase the likelihood of a visitor saying that birds are an important attraction. In addition, the relative importance to visitors of...

Brazilian tropical dry forest (Caatinga) in the spotlight: an overview of species of Aspergillus, Penicillium and Talaromyces (Eurotiales) and the description of P. vascosobrinhous sp. nov. Acta Botanica
Barbosa,Renan do Nascimento; Bezerra,Jadson Diogo Pereira; Santos,Ana Carla da Silva; Melo,Roger Fagner Ribeiro; Houbraken,Jos; Oliveira,Neiva Tinti; Souza-Motta,Cristina Maria de.
ABSTRACT A literature-based checklist of species of Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Talaromyces recorded in the Brazilian tropical dry forest (Caatinga), the largest tropical dry forest region in South America, is provided. A total of 130 species (60 Aspergillus, 57 Penicillium, and 13 Talaromyces) are reported. Soil was the most common substrate, with 122 species records. Various reported species are well known in biotechnological processes. This checklist reflects the limited knowledge of fungal species in tropical dry environments. These data provide a good starting point for biogeographical studies on species of Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Talaromyces in dry environments worldwide. In addition, the new species Penicillium vascosobrinhous is introduced,...

Butterflies for the new millennium: mapping butterfly distributions in Britain (Lepidoptera) Naturalis
Fox, R.; Warren, M.; Harding, P.; Asher, J.; Jeffcoate, G.; Jeffcoate, S..
Butterflies for the new millennium: mapping butterfly distributions in Britain (Lepidoptera) Butterflies for the New Millennium is the largest and most comprehensive survey of butterfly distribution ever undertaken in Britain and Ireland. The number of contributing recorders, the coverage achieved and the number and quality of distribution records generated far exceed those available for any other invertebrate taxon. The data thus provide a unique insight into the effects of habitat degradation and climate change on a high profile insect group. The results of the first five years of the survey (1995-1999) have been analysed to assess broad-scale distribution changes over the past two decades and the past two centuries. In both time periods, the British...
